Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained operational.
